Nate was eventually able to determine that wherever this river was it definitely was not located in China.
Chapter 9: Getting It Together
“April 20, 1863,” Nate whispered.
There was almost no part of that date that pleased him. The first number, the number of the year, was the closest digit to being correct. He would have preferred that it be a two but a one wasn’t so bad. However, the eight, the six and the three were all wrong.
The last date Nate could recall accurately was something in late March. If this was April 20, he had missed his birthday.
Actually, having a birthday was not a thing that he normally looked forward to. For one thing nobody ever seemed to remember his birthday anyway. He would just wind up being depressed once again like he was every other year.
However, it was the principle of the thing. At least if the situation were normal he would have had a birthday for people to forget about. He would have gotten a card from Jim probably a week or two late. And he would get a timely card from Aunt Jane, addressed “to a dear nephew,” and with a crisp new dollar bill inside. Aunt Jane always remembered everybody’s birthday.
Nate always got a card from his sister Sarah. It was on time every year no matter where in the world she might have to send it from.
In most years he even got a card from Jesse.
One conclusion that he hoped he could make was that this newspaper he was holding was over a hundred years old. However, if Early collected antique newspapers, he would probably not carry around his collection in his coat pocket. Also this newspaper was in mint condition. Of course Nate was fairly sure that newspapers were not printed at the mint. However, he couldn’t think of a better way to describe the near perfect preservation of the item.
Nate decided that he would have to test an alternative solution to determine what was going on.
“Hey, Tom,” cried Nate, “who is the president of the United States of America?”
“Come on, Nate,” replied Tom, “the president of the United States of America is Abraham Lincoln.”
Nate was afraid that Tom was going to say that.
“What’s the story about Jefferson Davis? What do you think about him? I am sure that you’ve heard of Jefferson Davis,” Nate said.
“I’ll tell you one thing about Jefferson Davis,” replied Tom, “in my opinion he was the best damned Secretary of the War the United States ever had. What do you think, Early?”
“I would agree with you there Tom. Davis did an outstanding job as the Secretary of War.”
“Hold on,” said Nate “do you expect me to believe about Jefferson Davis being the Secretary of War for the United States of America?”
“Sure thing,” said Early, “Pierce appointed him.”
Nate was beginning to feel like himself again, confused. The Abraham Lincoln part made sense, but the part about Jefferson Davis being the Secretary of War didn’t fit in at all with Nate’s recollection of history.
